One-to-one counselling for children and young people
When children and young people are struggling with their wellbeing, how they interact with the world or how to face certain unique challenges in their lives, counselling can support them to build the self-awareness and tools to thrive. These sessions are a combination of relationship building, talk, play, psychoeducation and collaborative visioning that is tailored to each individual’s needs and develops throughout the work together.
Avenue Counselling works in a person-centred manner, which means sessions are focused on the needs of the child or young person in that moment, and as a whole. This style helps to resolve challenges they are facing, however if this doesn’t fully meet the needs of the parents and carers, we suggest our family counselling or parent consultation services for further support.
Family counselling
Some challenges that young people and families face can affect the dynamics between the children and parents, the parental dynamics and the relationships across the whole family. It is during these times that parents and carers can find it helpful to seek family counselling for support.
Family counselling can help to improve communication, resolve tensions and anxieties and help the family and individuals feel more connected with each other. It can support the family through life’s challenging circumstances such as bereavement, or when support is needed to navigate difficult dynamics.
The sessions offer a space for various members to work together in whatever combinations the initial referrer and counsellor decide together, and can change from week to week. Sessions are usually a combination of talk, play, facilitation, psychoeducation and collaborative visioning that will differ with the family group as the work progresses.
Parenting consultation
Lots of parents and carers come up against difficult challenges with their children and young people. For this reason, Avenue Counselling offers a burst of sessions to support parents and carers during a time of challenge with their children or young people. The standard length of support is four sessions, but this can be extended if more are needed. These sessions can be during a time when your child or young person is receiving support from Avenue Counselling or No Limits, but it is also worth reaching out if you need parenting support but haven’t yet decided to have individual sessions for your child.
The parenting consultation sessions are intended to:
Give parents and carers the time to be heard while they offload
Link the particular challenges they and their child or young person face to understanding about human interactions, child development and family dynamics
Understand the way their own personal experiences and manner are relevant to the challenging aspects of what their family, children and young people are facing
